Cricket Scoring - Bowling analysis - Byes and Leg-Byes

Byes and Leg-Byes

Fig 2
This is the 3rd over for B.Lokes from the bowling analysis in Fig 1 above.

It's important to note that bowlers are NOT PENALISED for Byes or Leg-Byes. The bowler has produced a perfectly good ball, it's just that it's evaded everyone - the batter, the wicket keeper and any fielders behind the stumps.

It may be the case that the ball rolls away and crosses the boundary for 4 or the batters see the opportunity to run a singe or more, but this is not the bowlers fault and any runs incurred off of a Bye or Leg-Bye are not recorded in the bowling data.

What you should do is record that the Bye or Leg-Bye occurred during the over. This is usually done by marking an upward pointing triangle for a Bye (First symbol top left in Fig 2) or a downward pointing triangle for a Leg-Bye (4th ball of the over) in fig 2.

The previous over B.Lokes had gone for 6 runs for 0. In this over despite the Bye and the Leg-Bye which may have gone for 4's if they crossed the boundary, B.Lokes has only gone for 1 more run off his bowling, so he ends up with figures of 7-0 off of three overs at this stage of his spell.

Bye/Leg-Bye Maiden
Fig 3

If the Byes or Leg-Byes occur during an over where the other balls are 'Dot Balls. The over is still a Maiden over and the M needs to be written in the box as here in Fig 3. See bowler A.Nother above in Fig 1 (3rd over).

The same applies if the a wicket is taken in a Wicket Maiden over that includes a Bye or Leg-Bye. In this instance the W is written over the symbols to indicate it's a Wicket Maiden over.

If you'r wondering where the runs for the Maidens are recorded, they are only recorded in the Extras box. They're added to the collective bowlers tally at the end of the innings/game and go against the wicket keeper more than anyone else as they've let them go past them!

All of the bowlers collective figures plus all of the Byes and Leg-Byes are added up at the end of the inning/game and these should correspond with the 'Cumulative Tally'.
